Mazda Cars, a renowned Japanese automobile manufacturer, was founded in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920 under the name Toyo Cork Kogyo Company. The company has earned a strong reputation in the market for producing affordable and exhilarating performance cars. Mazda’s journey began with the production of a three-wheeled truck in 1931, and it was founded by Jujiro Matsuda, who chose the name “Mazda” after the Zoroastrian god of light and good.
During World War II, Mazda had to suspend its production activities, but it refocused on car manufacturing and development after the war. The first passenger vehicle manufactured by Mazda was the R360 Coupe. In 1961, Mazda entered into a partnership with Wankel and NSU to develop and manufacture rotary engines. As a result, Mazda became the only manufacturer to offer three different engine configurations: conventional rotary, diesel, and gasoline piston.
In the 60s, Mazda Cars introduced the B Series 1500 pickup, while the first rotary engine vehicle produced by the company was the 110S Cosmo Sport. Mazda started selling cars in the United States in 1970, launching models such as the RX-2, which became known as an affordable and fun-to-drive car powered by a rotary engine. The company continued to manufacture and launch other notable models, including the RX-7 sports car, RX-3, and RX-4. In 1979, Ford Motor Company purchased 25 percent of Mazda’s shares.
In the 1990s, Mazda achieved remarkable success, winning races like Le Mans with its production vehicle, the 787B, becoming the first Japanese automaker to win this prestigious race. In the new millennium, Mazda continued to build its reputation by investing in new developments, resulting in impressive and excellent results.

Powering the Mazda RX7 is a 1.3-liter turbocharged dual-cylinder rotary engine, generating 217 pound-feet of torque and 255 horsepower. The RX7 is highly regarded as an all-around impressive performer, offering speed, agility, and a lightweight design. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 5 seconds and features high-performance components like a five-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, and antilock disc brakes.
Driving the Mazda RX7 delivers a spirited experience on highways, competing with other sports cars in terms of distinctive styling and exhilarating performance. However, it’s worth noting that the reputation of the rotary twin-turbo engine in terms of durability is not as strong, as many RX7 models have been modified and driven aggressively with aftermarket performance parts.
